Those fragrant Mother's Day floral arrangements and spring baskets popping with brilliant color may be available through a variety of local retailers, but many of those plants were originally cultivated and grown at Didier Greenhouses, Inc.The company, in business since 1948, sells to more than 300 florists and garden centers in a 200-mile radius of its 4601 W. State St. location. "We are a production grower of container-potted ornamental plants," said Edward Didier, Jr., who, along with several family members, runs the business started by his father, Edward Didier, Sr. and his siblings. Back then, Ed Sr.'s father had a downtown Rockford florist shop. "Ed started the greenhouse to grow cuts for the florist," said Edward Didier, Jr. Nowadays, the company has 28 full-time, year-round employees, and a workforce that swells to 40 in the peak spring season. "We do large holly, poinsettia, and Easter lily crops and for Mother's Day we do a complete full-line spring production," he said. Sales have remained steady at the family enterprise. "A quality crop sells itself," said Andrew Didier. "We're in the business of bringing happiness to people."
