City Body Shop has been a Rockford fixture since the business launched in 1958. Current owner, Bill Wishard, got involved in the business at the tender age of eight, working under his father's supervision. "I started by sweeping the floor. He made sure that I was busy," Wishard remembers with a smile. "He was tough but he had a good heart." Bill succeeded his late father LaVerne as sole owner after buying out his two siblings' share of the enterprise.Service is job #1 at this collision repair shop that handles about 100 vehicle repairs each month. "We're licensed for all the surrounding states. We tow your car in from the accident, get you set up with a rental car and work with the insurance company to get your vehicle fixed. All you've got to do is pick it up," said Wishard. The shop employs 10 people; six in the garage and four in the office. Most are longtime employees including General manager John Toldo who has been with City Body Shop for 21 years. "I'm very grateful for the employees we've had through the years," said Wishard. "If you're going to work here, the quality of the work has to be up there. We offer a lifetime warranty on our workmanship." City Body Shop's first location, on Winnebago Street, was traded for a spot on Second Street before expanding and then moving to its current site at 301 N. Madison Street in 1998. "We consolidated our towing business and our body shop all into one modern facility," said Wishard. In his free time, Wishard —who is a lifelong Rockford resident —enjoys golfing on some of the region's spectacular courses. "It's a good city. We like the downtown and we love the city market," said Wishard.
