The Prairie Street Brewing Company has become one of downtown Rockford's most popular dining and entertainment spots. This location has been home to Rockford's best brews for over 150 years. English immigrant Jonathan Peacock founded the Peacock Brewery in 1849 grinding the malt in a coffee mill, brewing the mash in a washtub, and delivering his wares in a wheelbarrow. When John V. Petritz purchased the property in 1899 and built the majority of the building you see today, he renamed the company Rockford Brewing Company. When prohibition came the name was changed to Rockford Storage Warehouse. After prohibition it became a brewery again for a very short time with the name of Rock River Brewing Company. In 1945 it became the home of many small businesses and Modern Laundry and Dry Cleaning Company. In 2000 the building was purchased by a local couple and the renovations were started to turn the building into what you see today. The main restaurant boasts a bar and tables made from wood more than 100 years old reclaimed from the original building. Downstairs in the Dock Side Taproom, patrons can take in their favorite sporting event on the many TVs, or sample one of the 24 brews on tap. The numerous historic banquet and meeting rooms host hundreds of weddings and events throughout the year. From hosting small meetings in the Petritz Conference Room, to city-wide events for over 5,000 people, Prairie Street Brewing Company has the space, food and beverages, and friendly staff to host any size gathering. In the summer, Prairie Street Brewing Company hosts Thursday night Dinner on the Dock. The event brings thousands of people to the riverfront every week and features live music and food grilled on the dock, not to mention the fresh brews and cocktail specials.Open daily for lunch and dinner, the Prairie Street Brewing Company is known for their great food from burgers and fish tacos to turkey club sandwiches, flat breads, and scrumptious, seasonal daily specials. In addition, the beers themselves have become a destination of their own. The company features 16 of their own brews on tap at any given time. The selections vary seasonally, but there are also permanent brews like the flagship "Nicolob," which pays tribute to the historic brew of John Peacock. The slogan for Peacock's brew was "You'll find good cheer in Nicolob, the beer that made Milwaukee jealous."
