Wrapped in rich history, the Prairie Street Brewhouse has become both a destination and an anchor to the re-development of downtown Rockford. The historic architectural landmark on the edge of the Rock River is the oldest brewery building in the state of Illinois, and is listed on the National Historic Register.Purchased in 2000, by it's current owners, a local, downtown-Rockford-loving couple, the 80,000 square foot building is now a multi-use facility featuring restaurants, dock slips, gas for boats, banquet facilities, and 10 luxury apartments. The main restaurant, Prairie Street Brewing Company is both a restaurant and brewery, featuring meeting and banquet rooms, multiple bars, daily food specials and 24 beers on tap. In the summer on Thursday nights, the boardwalk is home to "Dinner on the Dock", which brings in thousands of people to dine and drink while listening to live music and taking in the views of the river and downtown Rockford. The attention to detail is noticeable in the luxury apartments, which boast modern, clean lines and appliances while each features it's own unique history of the building. From original staircases to bare brick walls, wooden beams, and plank ceilings, the history of the building was kept a part of each of the unique units. With it's location on the bank of the Rock River in downtown Rockford, each unit has a view of the beautiful landscape of downtown Rockford and the Rock River. Each apartment also boasts either a balcony or roof-top deck. The attention to detail and excellence in preservation of the history of the building was recognized in 2015 with the Landmarks Illinois and Richard H. Driehuaus Foundation Rehabilitation Award.
