Home Schooling

According to the Illinois State Board of Education, “In a 1950 decision by the Illinois Supreme Court, People v Levinsen, the Court decided that home schooling in Illinois is considered to be a form of private education. Parents who choose to educate their children at home are under a legal obligation to meet the minimum requirements stated in Illinois Compulsory Attendance Law (Section 26-1 of the Illinois School Code).”
Statistics on children who are being home-schooled vary. In the State of Illinois, approximately 60,932 children are home schooled. There are many reasons why parents choose home schooling. Some of the top reasons are: special needs children, the ability to provide a better quality of education, religious/social and moral values, dissatisfaction with poor learning environments, and cost of public education. There is statistical data to show that home-schooled children are equal to or above academic achievement when compared to children who are public schooled. There are numerous national organizations available for parents seeking assistance with choosing and implementing home school curriculums.
